7th Grade Math Description:

The 7th grade math curriculum in Davidson County follows the Common Core Math Standards. A brief description is included below, a more in depth description can be found at http://www.corestandards.org/Math/Content/7/introduction/. The school year will be broken up into 8 general units but we will begin the year focusing on Mathematical Mindset and Problem Solving.

Here are the units that we will learn about in order:

  • Proportional Relationships
  • Reasoning with Rational Numbers
  • Probabilistic Reasoning
  • Reasoning About Expressions
  • Reasoning About Equations and Inequalities
  • Geometric and Measurement Reasoning
  • Reasoning About Population Samples
  • Comparing Populations
  • Compacted Math will complete all 7th grade topics and additional 8th grade topics including a unit on Functions.

Materials:

Students are expected to come to class prepared with all necessary materials.

  • INB-Interactive Notebook, A marble composition book used only for math.  You may need 2.
  • Coloring utensils, Colored pencils are preferred because they do not bleed through the INB pages.
  • Scissors.
  • Highlighters, Pencils, and/or pens.
  • Glue Sticks and/or tape. These need to be replenished throughout the school year.

**Materials need to be in class by Friday August 31, 2018**

Classroom Rules and Expectations:

1. Be on time for class and in your seat ready to learn with the appropriate materials for the day.

2.Respect your fellow classmates, the classroom materials, and the teacher but most importantly respect yourself.

3.If I am talking, you are listening.

4.Always give 100% and I will give 110% in return!

5.All school rules need to be followed in the classroom.

Interactive Notebook (INB):

Our INB is the key to success this year. You will be using this INB EVERY DAY. Organization and neatness is very important. If you do not finish an assignment it is expected that this be completed for homework (unless told otherwise). DO NOT LOSE THIS INB! Everything for math will be completed (for the most part) in this INB!

Google Classroom:

Many of our assignments will be posted on Google Classroom. If you lose something from a day and there are not any “extra” copies in the classroom, you can go to the Google Classroom and print one out for yourself. There will often be review opportunities posted in the Google Classroom for each unit.

SchoolNet:

SchoolNet is an online system that is provided by the Davidson County School District. This program is provided to allow students online testing opportunities to prepare for their online benchmarks and EOG’s. The math department at LMS uses SchoolNet as our primary resource for major tests and minor quizzes. SchoolNet assessments are reviewable after the test is completed. Students are encouraged to look over their tests and show parents their tests at home. Please ask your student to log on to his/her SchoolNet account and view their assessments throughout the school year. These assessments are great study tools!

Absent from Class?

If you are absent from class it is YOUR responsibility to get your assignments (Yes! That includes your homework and warm-ups!). You can find assignments you missed in the classroom and on the Google Classroom. **(NO EXCUSES!)**

Late Work:

Work that is not submitted on time will be counted as late. Late work receives an AUTOMATIC  point deduction!

Grading Policy:

All Davidson County middle schools follow the same grading policy.  The grading policy is: 40% Major Assignments/Unit Tests, 35% Minor Assignments/Quizzes, and 25% Classwork/Homework.

Note: Students who do not earn a 60% as a final average (average of the four quarters) will be retained.

Grading Scale:

90 - 100 A

80 - 89   B

70 - 79   C

60 - 69   D

59 or below F

Parent Portal (SchoolNet for Students):

Parent Portal is the primary way that parents will be notified of students grades. If you do not have a Parent Portal account please visit the front office to set this up. Grades will be updated WEEKLY. Parents (and students) need to check Parent Portal WEEKLY. If there are questions or concerns seen regarding a student's grade, please ask the student about this first! If there is still confusion please do not hesitate to email with your questions. Please note that if you see a “0” written in, your child has not turned in the assignment and that assignment will now be counted late. If there is a “blank space”, the assignment has not yet been graded or is not yet due (check the due date of the assignment). If the assignment is highlighted, there is typically a comment attached. Please click on the assignment and view the comments. If you have questions regarding Parent Portal please do not hesitate to ask.

Final Note:

Being successful in school is similar to being successful at a sport because you MUST practice. Each student should be doing some math at home every night even if there is no homework assigned. If there isn’t an assignment, go back and read your notes, re-work problems, or practice basic skills (just for 10-15 minutes). Good study habits and hard work help lead to success.
